PSHE
Christian Value: Love, Friendship, Forgiveness, Courage, Hope, Honesty, Respect
Intent
At Kirby Hill Church of England Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is guided by our Christian vision that “All things are possible for one who believes”. Rooted in our ACHIEVE curriculum drivers, it is shaped by the Christian values of Love, Friendship, Forgiveness, Courage, Hope, Honesty and Respect. These values underpin all learning and relationships, helping children to grow as compassionate, resilient and responsible individuals.
Our ACHIEVE curriculum drivers:
· Aspire
· Challenge
· Honour every individual
· Inspire curiosity and creativity
· Embed strong values
· Value community and global connections
· Empower through knowledge
PSHE is an essential part of our whole-school ethos. It provides children with the knowledge, skills and values they need to flourish as individuals, family members and members of wider society. At Kirby Hill, we seek to develop pupils’ confidence, resilience and wellbeing while ensuring they are equipped to live healthy, safe, responsible and fulfilled lives.
From the Early Years Foundation Stage, children are introduced to PSHE themes through play, stories and discussion, beginning to understand friendship, kindness, honesty and respect. From Key Stage 1 onwards, PSHE is taught progressively, covering health, relationships, safety, citizenship and economic wellbeing.
Our curriculum encourages children to celebrate differences, develop empathy and make informed choices. Sensitive topics such as relationships, mental health, online safety and risk management are taught with care and honesty, always upholding our Christian values. By embedding opportunities for forgiveness, courage, and hope, children learn that mistakes are part of growth, and that they have the power to make positive changes for themselves and their community.
With love at the heart of our approach, we aspire for every child to leave primary school with the confidence to contribute positively to society, the courage to stand up for what is right, and the hope to believe in their future.
Implementation
Lessons are planned and delivered using the Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)
Framework (October 2019). We endeavour to make this learning as cross-curricular as possible through themed weeks, visits and visitors. Please see our PSHE Long Term Plan in the ‘Guides’ section of the school website, as well as our PSHE Vocabulary Framework for Parents.
EYFS
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, PSHE is introduced through circle time, stories, play and exploration. Children learn about emotions, kindness, taking turns, respecting others, and beginning to understand the importance of honesty and friendship.
Key Stages 1 and 2
From Year 1 onwards, PSHE is taught in line with the Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and PSHE Framework (2019), ensuring full coverage of statutory requirements. Our spiral curriculum builds knowledge and skills year-on-year, revisiting key concepts in an age-appropriate way.
The RSE & PSHE Entitlement Framework is structured into 5 themes: Me and My Relationships, Keeping Myself Safe, My Healthy Lifestyle, Me and My Future, and Becoming an Active Citizen. At Kirby Hill C of E Primary School, we ensure that our curriculum provision for RSE, PSHE and Citizenship meets the needs of our pupils and community and
that pupils are able to develop essential skills and attributes, as well as knowledge.
As a Church of England Primary School, we actively support and promote Valuing All God’s Children (updated July 2019): “Church of England schools have at their heart abelief that all children are loved by God, are individually unique and that the school has a mission to help each pupil to fulfil their potential in all aspects of their personhood:
physically, academically, socially, morally and spiritually.” We strive to create an inclusive school environment that enables all children and young people to flourish and this
work helps us to do that. As part of this work, we teach all of our pupils about the importance of equality and respect. Y5 & Y6 pupils learn about Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ+) identities and this work is threaded sensitively through all of the PSHE themes where appropriate – rather than a stand-alone unit or lesson. All of our Big Questions encourage the children to explore LGBTQ+ at an appropriate level too. The intended learning outcomes for each of the themes are provided for each year group. The learning outcomes comprise the knowledge, understanding and skills that
learners need to develop in order to live safe, happy and healthy lives.
The learning outcomes are colour coded to illustrate where the aspects of PSHE and Citizenship are covered within the themes (risk taking and keeping safe are weaved throughout the aspects): Relationships and Sex Education, Online Safety, Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco and wider risk taking behaviours, Careers education and personal finance, Citizenship, Healthy Lifestyles (Physical and Emotional Wellbeing), Emotional health and wellbeing.
Links with other Statutory National Curriculum Requirements
It is important that cross curriculum links are made for the pupils with related topics in Science, Computing, RE, History, Design and Technology and other relevant subjects.
Delivery
· Weekly PSHE lessons are taught across all year groups, reinforced through assemblies, collective worship and our Christian values.
· Learning is enriched through themed weeks, external visitors, community links, and cross-curricular projects.
· Children are encouraged to apply PSHE values in daily school life: showing friendship on the playground, courage in class discussions, honesty in reflection, forgiveness in conflict, and respect in all relationships.
By combining structured lessons with real-life opportunities, PSHE at Kirby Hill develops children’s ability to make wise decisions, show compassion, and contribute positively to the school and wider community.
